“I Can’t Breathe” Silent March for the day before jury selection begins for the trial of former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin, who was accused of killing George Floyd in Minneapolis, Minnesota. After Justice, the protesters raise their fists and chant.
The city of Minneapolis will pay $ 27 million to settle a lawsuit over the death of George Floyd’s family in police detention. The proceedings aroused public protests against racial injustice and police atrocities.
Mayor Jacob Frey will hold a press conference with other elected officials and Floyd’s family on Friday afternoon to discuss the reconciliation, the city said.
Floyd, a 46-year-old black man, died in May after Derek Chauvin, a white Minneapolis police officer, knelt on his neck for nearly nine minutes. Floyd’s dying plea for help was captured in a widespread bystander video. This helped trigger one of the biggest protests ever seen in the United States.
Chauvin’s trial, fired by police, began earlier this week in the Hennepin County District Court for murder and manslaughter. Chauvin pleaded not guilty and said he had properly followed police training.
Judge Peter Cahill has set aside approximately three weeks for the jury selection in the case that attracted attention. So far, six juries have been seated.
Last year, Floyd’s relatives sued the city, Chauvin, and three other police officers involved in federal court, alleging that police violated Floyd’s constitutional rights and used excessive force.
The settlement announced on Friday includes a $ 500,000 donation from Floyd’s family to the community at the Minneapolis intersection where Floyd died. This intersection is banned from police access by residents and is full of tribute to flowers and other floyds.
Chauvin helped arrest Floyd on the night of May 25, allegedly using a counterfeit $ 20 bill to buy cigarettes at the Cup Foods grocery store at the crossroads.
Three other police officers will be tried later this year for helping Chauvin with the death of Floyd, who was sentenced to murder by a coroner. Minneapolis police fired all four policemen the day after the deadly arrest.
