Preparations underway for peaceful KCC polls: Returning Officer

All sorts of preparations are being taken to hold Khulna City Corporation (KCC) elections in a free, fair, transparent and credible way.

 Returning Officer of KCC election Md Younus Ali on Friday said “we are taking all preparations to arrange a fair and peaceful election in KCC.”

Some 289 presiding officers, 1,561 assistant presiding officers, 3,122 polling officers will be deployed to hold the polls in peaceful manner in 1561 booths under 289 polling centres, he said, reports BSS.

Ten judicial magistrates and 60 executive magistrates will be on duty in the city from May 14 to maintain law and order situation during the election, added.

Adequate number of law enforcers, including 31 police teams with 10 striking forces, 16 platoons of BGB and 32 RAB teams will remain deployed in and around the polling stations and other places of the city on the Election Day.

The Election Commission has already appointed a ‘Vigilance Team’ comprising 22 members led by a joint secretary Md Abdul Baten.

Baten has been made as the chief coordinator while Acting Regional Election Officer of Rangpur G M Sahatab Uddin has been made as deputy chief coordinator of the team. The ‘Vigilance Team’ has begun their task from May 9.

The returning officer said some 2,978 voters will get opportunity to cast their votes through Electronic Voting Machine (EVM) in two centers in the forthcoming KCC elections scheduled to be held on May 15.

He said the centers where the polling will be held in EVM method are Sonapota Government Primary School under Ward No. 24 and PTI Zasim Uddin Hostel under Ward No. 27 for the second time in the city.

“We are taking full-length preparation to make the EVM method polling activities a total success,” Ali said.

Some 52, 094 new voters have been included in the updated final voters list, leading the total number of voters to 4, 93,092, he added.
