Staff Reporter : Another road in the United States has been named former President of Bangladesh Ziaur Rahman. The road was named ‘Ziaur Rahman Way’ by the Department of Transportation in Baltimore, Maryland. Maryland State Delegate Robin T. Lewis unveiled the nameplate of the road in the presence of expatriate Bangladeshis at a colorful event organized by the Bangladeshi-American Community Maryland on Sunday. About Seven years ago, a road was named ‘Ziaur Rahman Way’ in Chicago, Illinois, USA.
Maryland House Member Delegate Robin T. Lewis, Delegate Harry Vendary, Governor’s Office Commissioner Dr. Sam Carkey, the mayor’s office representative, Robert Jackson, Anis Ahmed, a former commissioner in the local mainstream political governor’s office, and journalist Mushfiqul Fazal Ansari.
Robin T. Lewis said that the people of Baltimore are very happy to pay their respects to Ziaur Rahman. To respect him means to respect democracy, to respect human rights. Just as President Zia built the country, he also upheld human rights. Today’s joy is not only of the Bangladeshi community, but of the entire Asian community. The roadblock unveiled in the name of President Zia in this city will remain forever. He sought greater participation of the Bangladeshi community in mainstream politics.
BNP leaders Zillur Rahman Zillu, Mizanur Rahman Bhuiyan Milton, Gias Ahmed, Sharafat Hossain Babu, Mostafa Kamal Pasha, Jasim Uddin Bhuiyan, Abdus Sabur and others were also present on the occasion. BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman, the eldest son of Ziaur Rahman, virtually joined the function from London.
