Staff Reporter: Two women candidates of Bangladeshi descent have won the primary election in New York City, New York, USA. Shahana Hanif and Soma Syed, a Bangladeshi-American attorney, are leading in the primary as judges of the Queens Civil Court in New York City. Bangladeshi Shahana Hanif is almost certain to win the ‘Ranked Choice’ vote in the Democratic primary from Council District-39. Another 11 Bangladeshi candidates have reportedly lost.
Shahana Hanif has taken a seat on the city council of the Democratic city of New York. She will run as a Democratic candidate in the November 2 general or final election. Shahana Hanif’s victory in that election will be just a formality. Because if you win in the primary, there is no reason to doubt New York City’s general election victory.
Meanwhile, Attorney Soma Saeed is on the verge of winning the primary election as a civil court judge. Even if she is elected, she will make history not only in New York, but in the whole of America. Soma Syed will be the first judge of Bangladeshi descent in a US court.
Local time Tuesday (June 22) New York City primary election is held from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. Earlier, advance and mail voting was held from June 12 to June 20. In this election, 13 Bangladeshi-Americans from three of the five boroughs of the city contested for different posts. Of these, 11 were from 6 council districts, one as a county judge and another as a female district leader.
However, after 9 pm on Tuesday, the results show that Shahana Hanif is the only one ahead in the city council elections. At the time of writing, Shahana Hanif had received 32.42 per cent of the 99 per cent in-person votes in District 39. She got a total of 10 thousand 691 votes. His nearest rival, Brendon West, received 22.52 percent of the vote, or 7,427 votes. Here the difference of votes with the main rival is about three thousand. Another Bangladeshi candidate in this district, Mamnoon Haque, got 1,354 votes.
The winning candidate must get 51 percent of the votes as a ranked choice vote. Otherwise, the equation of ‘ranked choice’ vote will become very difficult. Because the votes of the candidates who got less votes will be shared. However, it is known that there is no risk for Shahana Hanif.
On the other hand, Michael Goldman, the only rival of Attorney Soma Syed in the post of Queen’s Civil Court judge. As of the writing of this report, 95.45 percent of the votes have been counted. Soma got 74,487 votes. In other words, she got 50.92 percent of the total votes. Opponent Goldman received 70,714 votes, which is 48.37percent of the total votes. The remaining votes may have to wait until June 29.
Incumbent Brooklyn borough president and former police captain Eric Adams is leading the race for mayor of New York City. He got 96.62 percent of the vote and 31.66 percent. His rival Maya Wiley got 22.22 percent votes. Observing the results so far, it is known that Eric Adam is going to be the next city father of New York City.
