Staff Reporter: Bangladesh Permanent Mission to the United Nations in New York, USA celebrated the 72nd birth anniversary of Shaheed Sheikh Kamal, the greatest Bengali of all time, the eldest son of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and Bangamata Sheikh Fazilatunnesa Mujib. Officers and employees of all levels of the Permanent Mission participated in the event, which was held at the Bangabandhu Auditorium of the Permanent Mission on Thursday (August 5) local time.
At the beginning of the program, prayers were offered for the forgiveness of the departed souls of the heroic freedom fighter Shaheed Sheikh Kamal and all the martyred members of the family of the Father of the Nation with the ruthless bullets of the assassin on 15 August 1975. Then a documentary on the life and work of Sheikh Kamal was shown.
Permanent Representative and Ambassador of Bangladesh to the United Nations Rabab Fatima delivered the welcome address on the occasion. She said, “Sheikh Kamal, the founder of Abahani Sports Club, one of the founders of Dhaka Theater, one of the pioneers of group theater federation movement in independent Bangladesh and associated with numerous initiatives including music organization called Spondon Shilpagosthi, worked for the reconstruction of war-torn Bangladesh through sports and cultural movement. Addressing the youth, she said, “As a skilled organizer, athlete, musician, cultural and political figure, the unique role that Shaheed Sheikh Kamal has played in nation building in the newly independent Bangladesh by making maximum use of his own thoughts and creativity is a role model for the youth.”
Citing the example of Bangladesh’s remarkable progress in sports and culture under the leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, she said the dream of the visionary young Sheikh Kamal is being realized through this.
Ambassador Fatima said, “After killing the father of the nation and his family, the assassins were trying to distort and erase the history of Bangladesh. But the conspirators did not succeed. Because the history of Bangladesh and the history of the father of the nation and his family are tied in the same thread ”.
She called upon the new generation growing up in exile to highlight the history of the father of the nation and his family, especially the life and work of Sheikh Kamal.
After the welcome speech, the officers and staff of the mission participated in the open discussion session. They said the nation will forever remember the contribution made by Shaheed Sheikh Kamal in the development of sports and cultural world of independent Bangladesh. The speakers hoped that the youth of the country would uplift Bangladesh to a higher position in the sports and cultural arena following the ideals of Sheikh Kamal.
