Staff Reporter: The Bakhtiar Sunni Society of North America, a Stamford-based Islamic organization in Connecticut, has publicly supported three individuals involved in various anti-social and immoral activities in the biennial election of the Bangladeshi American Association of Connecticut (BAAC), one of the Bangladeshi organizations in the US state of Connecticut. In this incident, there is a storm of condemnation among the expatriates.
Nuru-Humayun Parishad presidential candidate Nurul Alam Nuru has been accused of multiple anti-social activities.
He was arrested by police in 2011 for illegally selling blue-film in grocery stores including his business gas station.
On August 26, 2017, the newly elected Kamal-Humayun Parishad of Baac organized a cultural evening in the auditorium of Thomas Edison Middle School in Meriden organized by the Bangladeshi American Association of Connecticut in Connecticut, USA. Renowned mass artist Fakir Alamgir and now popular expatriate artist Rizia Parveen from the United States were the main performers. A large sum of money was raised for the event. Nurul Alam Nuru, vice-president of the council, took the money collected at the ceremony to his house. It is learned that he embezzled the money in the last five years without sending it to the flood victims. Not only that, on that occasion, Nuru-Humayun Gang sang ‘Damadam Mast Kalandar’ Urdu song with Rizia Parveen and introduced subculture in the name of Bengali culture in Connecticut.

Also, he is known to be involved in adultery with multiple women. In 2019, he fell in love with a Hindu woman with the promise of a job and marriage. He fell in love with her for a long time by showing greed for marriage. At one point, he even arranged for her to divorce her husband. When the incident came to light, Nuru-Humayun Parishad presidential candidate Nurul Alam kicked the woman out of the rented house with a small child. At that time the general secretary, organizational secretary and the current General Secratary candidate Humayun Ahmed Chowdhury provided support and encouragement to Nuru and his girlfriend in various ways. He would always market Nuru’s lover from time to time. Humayun used to bring female artists from New York in the name of cultural programs and give them a chance to get close to Nuru. It is also known that he used to provide Nuru with a regular girl to converse.

Humayun Ahmed Chowdhury has taken the wife of a popular artist of Dhaka’s Prometheus Band unmarried and is now in love with her in dedarse and is living in a house in Jamaica, New York. He uses his sister’s bridgeport address in Connecticut just to get involved in politics. Although he is the general secretary of the Connecticut State Awami League, rumors are circulating about how he is contesting for the post of general secretary of the Bangladeshi American Association of Connecticut (BAAC), a completely non-political organization, including the Election Commission.

Meanwhile, Nuru-Humayun Parishad vice-presidential candidate Tarequl Ambia Tarek has revealed that the imam of the Baitul Mamu mosque in Manchester, Connecticut, has been severely insulted by him (the treasurer) in a series of fights and unpleasant incidents.
Imam and Madrasa teacher Maulana Jobayer Ahmed was conducting classes for the students of the Madrasa every week on October 12, 2019 at 10 am in front of the Bayt ul-Mamur Mosque. According to the rules of the madrasa, the students were supposed to come to class within the stipulated time, but the treasurer of the mosque committee, Tarek Ambia, brought his child about 15/20 minutes late. He kept knocking on the door. The class was going on inside so Imam Jobayer Ahmed could not understand the harsh words. Tarek Ambia became angry with the Imam for being late to open the door. He continued to abuse the Imam in vulgar language. When the Imam asked him to speak politely, he became more angry, at one point comparing Tarek Imam to an inferior animal. For this reason, Imam Jobayer Ahmed felt extremely humiliated. Imam returned to his home with a heavy heart. He has not come to the mosque since that day. Later another Imam was appointed. Sadly, he left Connecticut for Michigan.

Tarek also runs regular fundraising ads for mosques on Facebook, as well as wine, beer and vintage. His brother Taufiqul Ambia Tipu also called the expatriate Bangladeshi worshipers in Manchester as ‘Satan’ (Devil) through a Facebook post.
Asked why he supported a full panel despite knowing partially about the anti-social and immoral activities of these candidates, Ali Akbar Bappi, a servant of the Bakhtiar Sunni Society of North America and president of the paper, said he did not know all the facts. In particular, the imam of the mosque was insulted by Tarek Ambia. He first heard from me. And Nurul Alam has heard of Nuru’s illicit relationship or extramarital affair with a Hindu woman. When he later spoke to Nuru about the matter, he confessed to her that was why the Hindu woman’s allegations did not seem credible to him. However, when the woman went to his house several times and finally explained the matter, he also instructed the woman to become a Muslim. Asked if his Sunni society would now withdraw support from these candidates if the envoy showed evidence of a consensual intimacy between the two of them, he said, “We need to talk to everyone and have a meeting about it.” He said they had a meeting before supporting the panel.

The Bakhtiar Sunni Society of North America, a Stamford-based Islamic organization, has been widely criticized on social media for its support of individuals identified as being involved in such anti-social and immoral activities. A number of expatriates said that if they immediately informed the State Department of their support for those involved in un-Islamic, anti-social and immoral activities as an Islamic organization, an investigation against their non-profit organization would easily reveal what else was going on inside the Sunni society. As a result, their registration may be canceled from the list of non-profit organizations.
