Staff Reporter: Two Bangladeshis set a new record in the United States. Two Bangladeshi women candidates have been able to make history in the New York City election. Shahana Hanif, of Bangladeshi descent, has been elected the first Muslim woman from District 39 in the New York City Council election, and Attorney Soma Saeed has won the Queen’s County Civil Court. The victory of these two Bangladeshi women candidates set a new record in the United States including New York.
Democrat candidate Shahana Hanif received 28,292 votes in the New York City general election held on Tuesday (November 2), with 98.81 percent of the total votes cast. Her nearest rival, Brett Wincoop of the Conservative Party, received 2,522 votes.
Meanwhile, Attorney Soma Saeed received 1 lakh 34 thousand 999 votes for the post of Queens County Judge. Her nearest rival, William D. Shanahan of the Republican Party, received 88,062 votes.
Shahana Hanif and Attorney Soma Saeed have been elected unofficially in the gap between the votes received. However, the final results for the mail in and absentee ballot count will be known on November 15. The chances of the rival candidate winning are very low.
Earlier this year, She won the primary on June 22 and was officially nominated by the Democratic Party in the general election. Attorney Soma Saeed. She will hold this position for ten years. Her court will have jurisdiction to hear cases up to $25,000.
Upon hearing the news of the victory, Attorney Soma Saeed said that she was very happy with the victory. Glad those who voted for him too. She was always optimistic about winning. But I never let anyone understand that. Because the whole issue of her victory depended on the voters. They could not have won without voting. For this reason, there was no chance to say for sure that he would win.
Soma added that Queens County was under Democratic control. Everyone thinks that from here, whoever becomes the nominee of the Democratic Party will be able to win. For this reason, many people think that the victory of the primary is the real victory. But that was not the case. As important as voting was on the day of the general election, there is a need for victory and a formal declaration. So all in all, she knew she would win, but she was still working. This is the rule of election. Never be overconfident.
Attorney Soma Saeed said, “Many people think that luck has helped me.” In that, of course, but had to work. I didn’t do this job in one day, I worked slowly. The fruit of hard work and diligence is to have a man like me in this position. “I’ve been working with dedication,” she said. I will continue to do so in the future.
Shahana Hanif, the first privately elected Muslim Councilwoman (District-39), said her constituency of Brooklyn has Bangladeshi voters. However, the number is not much. Even then their vote was very important to me. Besides, people from different communities live in my area. So I had to rely on their votes so that he could win by getting the votes of all the communities. Didn’t know it would win. However, Shahana did not want to say that she would win.
She said after winning the primary she thought she could go to City Hall. But victory in the general election is needed to reach this final destination. With that victory, there is an opportunity to go. New history is going to be written through this victory.
Shahana said this victory would never have been possible without the help of Bangladeshis. She has worked for more than 15 long years. She has been able to use all the experiences she has had day by day. All in all, she needed to gain experience. She is grateful to everyone in his district and to those who have endorsed her, participated in the vote, helped her win, and voted for her.
She said there are people from different communities in her area. Among them are Bangladeshi Americans. Do a separate office for them. People will come there and we will help them solve their problems. Domestic violence in particular has increased now. People need help to solve that problem, there is an opportunity for parents to get involved at different levels of education. There they will be encouraged and assisted to get involved.
Shahana will also help many of the immigrants who have many problems. She said that his first task would be to go to the City Hall and Shahana wants to pass the bills which need to be passed urgently but even then it has not been done so far.
