Noman Sabit: US Republican candidate Donald Trump has secured the 270 electoral college threshold amid a tight race with his rival Democrat candidate Kamal Harris in the 2024 presidential contest.
Donald Trump has won the US presidency in a stunning political comeback four years after he left the White House.
According to US-based news outlets, Donald Trump got 277 electoral colleges and Harris got 224 till the filing of the report at 4:40 pm (Bangladesh time).
“America has given us an unprecedented and powerful mandate,” Donald Trump said early on Wednesday to a roaring crowd of supporters at the Palm Beach County Convention Center.
“We made history for a reason tonight. We’re going to help our country heal. This will be the golden age of America,” he said.
Harris did not speak to her supporters, who had gathered at her alma mater Howard University. Her campaign co-chair, Cedric Richmond, briefly addressed the crowd after midnight, saying Harris would speak publicly on Wednesday.
The former president was showing strength across broad swaths of the country, improving on his 2020 performance everywhere from rural areas to urban centres.
Republicans won a US Senate majority after flipping Democratic seats in West Virginia and Ohio. Neither party appeared to have an edge in the fight for control of the House of Representatives where Republicans currently hold a narrow majority.
