Bangla Press Desk:  Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) of attempting to dilute the legacy of the July uprising through token offers of parliamentary seats and vague promises of power-sharing, rather than engaging in meaningful dialogue on state reform.

Speaking at a rally in Asif Chattar, Satkhira, on Saturday, NCP Convenor Nahid Islam criticised what he described as cynical manoeuvres by the BNP to “buy off” revolutionary movements.

“They assumed we could be tempted by two or three seats in Parliament and a bit of power,” Nahid told the crowd. “But no revolutionary force that has faced death and endured can be bought so easily. No political party in Bangladesh has ever had the means to purchase our principles.”

The event formed part of the NCP’s ongoing campaign, “Desh Gorte July Padayatra” (July Walkathon for Building the Nation), aimed at mobilising public support for justice and structural reform.

Nahid stressed that the NCP’s demands remain focused on establishing a new constitution, securing justice, and delivering fundamental reform of the political system. “Those clinging to the old order – built on violence and extortion – are deluding themselves if they believe we’ll return to business as usual after so much sacrifice,” he said.

“The blood that’s been shed in this movement won’t allow a simple return to the past.”

Referencing a proposal the NCP tabled on 5 August for the formation of a national unity government, Nahid lamented the BNP’s refusal to consider the idea.

“We called for unity, for a government above party divisions to rebuild the nation,” he said. “But they dismissed it, insisting instead on rushing to elections within three or six months. They showed no interest in reform – only in dividing power.”. This article was originally published on The Daily sun.
