Bangla Press Desk: Malta is set to become the 150th country among 193 to unconditionally recognise Palestine as a sovereign state at the United Nations General Assembly in September.

The tally could have been 151, had London not attached any strings to its planned recognition in September.

Maltese Prime Minister Robert Abela made the announcement in a facebook post on Tuesday evening, hours after a similar declaration by British Prime Minister Keir Starmer and days after France also announced its recognition plans.

Malta joins the list of about 10 countries which have recognised Palestine or fixed a timeframe to do so since the start of the war in Gaza Strip.

The Malta government had been under increasing pressure from within its ranks to recognise a Palestinian state and the centre-right Opposition in mid-July also called for immediate recognition. In a facebook page, Prime Minister Abela said: “As a Government, we have taken the decision that during the United Nations General Assembly next September, our country will recognize the Palestinian State.

“This decision will be communicated here and shortly through the Permanent Secretary within the Ministry for Foreign Affairs and Tourism Christopher Cutajar during the High-Level Conference on the Two-State Solution between Israel and Palestine, of the United Nations, which is currently taking place in New York.

“Our country’s position testifies to our commitment to finding a solution in favour of lasting peace in the Middle East.” This article was originally published on Daily Sun.
