Staff Reporter: A former Shibir activist from Comilla’s Laksam Upazila is now the leader of the US Metro Washington Awami League. While studying at Nawab Faizunnesa Government College in Laksham in the eighties, Shibbir Ahmed alias Orpi Ahmed (pseudonym) was the senior vice-president of the present Metro Washington Awami League. He is currently a resident of Alexandria, Virginia. He is sometimes a writer, sometimes a journalist, sometimes a lyricist and sometimes a composer in the metro Washington (Washington DC, Virginia and Maryland) area.

According to a report published in the Daily Sorejomin Barta on September 26, Shibir has been patronizing Jamaat-e-Islami including the BNP in various ways even though he is based in Virginia, USA. Shibir Ahmed, a former active member of Shibir, came to the United States and infiltrated the Awami League, but through social media he expressed himself as the bearer of the ideology of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. Although he is a child of an Awami family, he has no involvement with Awami politics in the country. Apart from the patronage of Jamaat-e-Islami including BNP from exile, he tried to break it by entering various organizations in the United States and creating quarrels. In this regard, a well-known organization called ‘Friends and Family’ in Virginia can be mentioned. After joining the organization, which was registered in 2009, he got into a quarrel and left the organization. In 2017, another organization with almost the same name secretly registered. Which was published in 2018. There are 4/5 more organizations with the same name in the Metro Washington area. Besides, after the entry of the Awami League in this area, the committee of the local Awami League has created divisions within the party in various ways. He has also tactfully served as senior vice president on a committee in Metro Washington (Washington DC, Virginia and Maryland).

According to multiple sources, Shibbir Ahmed, son of late Jalal Ahmed, a former provincial member of Laksam in Greater Comilla and organizer of the Liberation War, has been living with his family in Alexandria, Virginia for a long time. Although he was the son of the late Awami League leader, he had no involvement with Awami League politics in the country. On the other hand, he has been accused of patronizing Jamaat-e-Islami and BNP in the country even though he is abroad. Ignoring the leaders and workers of Awami League, he has formed alliances with different ideologues including BNP-Jamaat. Shibbir Ahmed was an active front-line student leader when he was studying at Nawab Faizunnesa Government College in Laksham in the eighties. The then district BCL leader and now Laksam Upazila A. Shibir moved to the United States after the terrorist attack on Advocate Yunus Bhuiyan, the general secretary of the league. Shibir has a close friendship with Professor Rezaul Karim, the then president of the then student camp of Chattogram University (now a fugitive Jamaat leader). It is alleged that he is trying to revive the politics of Jamaat in Laksam-Manoharganj by colluding with him secretly. Apart from sponsoring Jamaat-e-Islami including BNP, Shibir Ahmed also has a role to play as a financial supplier to their own regional media. After a few years, especially during the national elections, he visited the country and held regular meetings with BNP-Jamaat leaders and activists. Shibbir Ahmed has become the leader of Awami League overnight after wearing the mask of Awami League in exile using his father’s identity. Recently, as the senior vice-president of the Metto Washington Awami League in the United States, he has been seen campaigning extensively through social media. Shibbir Ahmed, a staunch supporter of BNP-Jamaat politics, has been seen posting various praises of the Prime Minister on his Facebook page to attract her attention. He is the editor of multiple online news portals. He has also launched a portal called ‘Awami League Times.com’ to please the Awami League leaders. He is also the editor and publisher of this portal.

Leaders and activists of Laksam Awami League have expressed surprise at the virtual politics of Shibbir Ahmed, an expatriate from Virginia. Never before have they seen him associated with or stand by the leaders and activists of the local Laksam Awami League.

Meanwhile, a source in the Metto Washington Awami League said that Shibbir Ahmed’s activities were highlighted by Awami League leaders in the presence of Son of Prime Minister and Information and Technology Adviser Sajib Wazed Joy at a meeting of the local Awami League several years ago. But ignoring these issues, Sadeq Khan, who is claiming to be the president of a group of Awami League, has given rise to various controversies by appointing Shibbir Ahmed as the senior vice-president.

When asked about the report published in the Daily Sorejomin Barta, Shibbir Ahmed told the US media Bangla Press, Anyone who sees the news, especially any journalist, should understand that it is a false, , fabricated rumor that has been made on purpose. The news has no objectivity and no truth.
He has been living in the United States since 1995. If you search, you will know that all the supporters of the liberation war including the United States Awami League know him as a devoted Awami League or a soldier of the liberation war.
Prior to 1995, he lived in Laksham, his birthplace. Family wise, he was involved in Awami League politics from his birth in the Awami family. He mentioned that the same information can be found even if searched in Laksham.
He said that the newspaper in which the news was published, they should not have known him, nor should they have known him. He himself is a journalist and writer. He has a colorful life as a journalist. Shibbir said he believed that any newspaper or journalist who knew him would not publish such fabricated rumors and intentional news in his name.
