Staff Reporter : A fundraising event has been held for the New Milford City mayoral election in the US state of Connecticut on November 2. Mohammed Karim is running in this election as the first Bangladeshi councilman candidate in the history of Connecticut. Other candidates and leaders of the Bangladeshi community, including city mayoral candidate Ted Hine, were present at Ted-Karim’s joint ‘fundraising’ event at the John Pettibone Community Center in New Milford on Sunday (October 10) at noon local time.
New Milford, founded in 1711, is a town in Leachfield County, Connecticut, United States. The town is located 14 miles (23 km) northwest of Danbury on the banks of the Hausatonic River. The area of the city is about 62 square miles (161.2 km). New Milford is the largest city in the state in terms of land area. According to the 2010 census, the population was 28,142. According to the 2000 census-determined placement (CDP), the population is 27,121. The northern part of the city is part of the northwestern Connecticut region and the far eastern part is part of the Leachfield Hills region. New Milford is about 50 miles (80 km) west of Hartford, 65 miles (105 km) southwest of Springfield, Massachusetts, Albany, 85 miles (137 km) southeast of New York, and 77 miles (124 km) north of New York. The city is located in the east.
At the Ted-Karim joint fundraising event, mayoral candidate Ted Hine said the number of Muslims, including Bangladeshis, is increasing day by day in New Milford. If elected mayor of this city, he will work for Muslims including Bangladeshis. On the advice of Bangladeshi councilman candidate Mohammed Karim, he announced the construction of a graveyard for Muslims. Other leaders, including the Bangladeshi community, thanked mayoral candidate Ted Hine for his announcement.
Bangladeshi Councilman candidate Mohammed Karim said in his speech that serving the people is his long-standing hope. To that end, he is running as the first Bangladeshi councilman in New Milford. He has already received a wide response from people of all walks of life. If elected, he will be the first Bangladeshi councilman in Connecticut. His dream is to build a mosque and graveyard for Muslims in New Milford. He hopes to be able to implement it.
The number of Bangladeshis in New Milford is much less than other cities. However, he is hopeful that he will win the votes of the American voters.
Among others who spoke at the meeting were DTC Chairwoman Mary Jane Landgren of New Milford, Secretary of State Candidate Maritza Bond, Danbury expatriate businessman Helal-ul Karim, Manchester expatriate businessman Md. Masudur Rahman Apu and Bangladeshi American Association of Connecticut (BAAC) ex-president Mashiur Rahman Kamal, Dr. Shamim and Saif Munna.
