He was scheduled to be officially given a civic reception on Thursday evening, September 26, in the ballroom of the Marriott Marquis Hotel adjacent to Manhattan’s Times Square. The event was jointly organized by the Permanent Mission of Bangladesh to the United Nations and the Consul General of Bangladesh in New York. When various groups and organizations in New York began to about tenion his reception, the civic reception was canceled due to adverse reactions. Although admitting the cancellation of the civic reception, the Bangladesh Permanent Mission to the United Nations and the Bangladesh Embassy did not say anything about the exact reason for the cancellation of his reception.
Dr. Muhammad Yunus will address the United Nations on September 27. Tensions started in different groups of New York with his civic reception.
