Members of Rapid Action Battalion in an overnight drive arrested two members of an international gold smuggling racket with 135 gold bars from Uttar area on Saturday, reports UNB.
Lieutenant Colonel Sarwar Bin Kasem, commanding officer of Rab-1, said a team of Rab-1 conducted the drive and arrested some Mahbubur Rahman and Mir Jakir Hossain.
The value of the gold bars is around Tk 5 crore, said the Rab official adding that the duo are active members of international gold smuggling syndicate.
On Friday around 2pm, Mahbubur came to Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport by a Singapore Airlines flight and dropped the gold carrying bag inside the plane. Later in the evening, he took the bag from the airport gate.
Being tipped off; a Rab team followed Mahbubur and interrogated him around 4am on Saturday. “He admitted to smuggling gold bars,” said the Rab officer.
