Bangla Press Desk: A 104-year-old man, who was sentenced for killing two people during a robbery at a shop in Kishoreganj in 2000, surrendered before a Dhaka court on Tuesday.
After surrendering, Nur Mohammad sought bail pending his appeal, while Dhaka Speedy Trial Tribunal-4 Judge Farzana Yasmin rejected the bail petition and ordered that he be sent to jail.Mizanur, bench assistant of the court concerned, confirmed the matter.
According to the case statement, two people, Mosharraf Hossain and A Kabir, were killed while robbers were looting the shop of its owner, Md Ferdous, in the Boro Bazar area of Kishoreganj on the night of 30 December 2000. The robbers also looted Tk12.50 lakh and 110 bhori of gold from the shop’s safe.
A case was filed with Kishoreganj Police Station in connection with the incident.
On 13 February 2002, Kishoreganj police submitted a charge sheet against 14 people. Charges were later framed against the accused.
The case was subsequently transferred from Kishoreganj to a Dhaka Speedy Trial Tribunal for trial.
On 16 November 2003, Dhaka Speedy Trial Tribunal-4 sentenced Nur Mohammad to death. Several other accused were also sentenced to death or life imprisonment.
Following a hearing on the death reference, the High Court on 19 August 2007 commuted Nur Mohammad’s death sentence to 10 years’ imprisonment.
Nur Mohammad had confessed to his involvement in the killings in a statement. He was later released on bail and went into hiding. He was also absconding when the verdict was delivered.
