South Africa Correspondent: Sixteen people—including police officers, awaiting-trial prisoners, and taxi passengers—have been killed in two separate road accidents in South Africa. Six people died in Limpopo province, while ten lost their lives in KwaZulu-Natal province.
On Tuesday morning (October 6), a head-on collision occurred between a police vehicle and a pickup truck (bakkie) on the R-524 Levubu road near Louis Trichardt in Limpopo's Vhembe district.
Police stated that a vehicle from the Shilwavhusiku police station was transporting three awaiting-trial prisoners to a correctional facility in Thohoyandou. En route, the vehicle collided head-on with a white Mahindra pickup truck belonging to the Tshisimani Water entity. Five people died at the scene. Later, the death toll rose to six after a critically injured police officer passed away while undergoing treatment at the hospital.
The deceased include three police officers, two awaiting-trial prisoners, and the driver of the pickup truck. Another prisoner sustained serious injuries and remains under police guard while receiving hospital treatment.
Separately, on Wednesday afternoon (October 7), ten people were killed in a minibus taxi accident on the MR-385 road in the Cato Ridge area, near Hillcrest in KwaZulu-Natal province. Five others were critically injured in the incident and are receiving medical treatment.
Relevant authorities have launched investigations to determine the causes of both accidents. A case of culpable homicide has also been registered regarding the accident in Limpopo province. Source: jugantor
