Bangla Press Desk: Bangladesh’s school textbooks for the year 2027 will revisit the July Uprising, the “mass killings” and key episodes from Sheikh Hasina’s rule, parliament has heard.
Education Minister ANM Ehsanul Hoque Milon revealed the plan responding to a question from reserved-seat MP Rokeya Begum, the mother of the 2024 July slain Jabir Ibrahim.
State Minister for Education Bobby Hajjaj gave the reply on his behalf.
Lessons will cover the Uprising’s causes, events, mass killings, martyrs’ sacrifices, women’s role and historical significance, according to students’ age and grade.
The Class 9-10 History of Bangladesh and World Civilisation book will also include enforced disappearances, mass killings, money laundering, destruction of the electoral system, the Pilkhana incident, journalist killings and media interference.
The government proposes one office assistant at every primary school under PEDP-5, if approved.
It also plans regular religious education, arts and music at primary schools, and midday meals at all madrasas, including Ebtedayee, during 2026-31.
There are 8,229 MPO-listed madrasas, including 5,768 Dakhil, 1,284 Alim, 993 Fazil and 184 Kamil institutions.
No immediate plan exists to nationalise 1,873 registered private primary schools.
The primary school dropout rate is currently 16.25 percent, with the government running school-feeding and stipend programmes to reduce it. Free uniforms, bags, shoes and educational materials are also being provided.
Ebtedayee madrasas are outside the primary ministry’s jurisdiction. Meanwhile, 1,783 kindergartens have entered the registration process since July.
