Abrar Fahad memorial to be inaugurated at Palashi today

Bangla Press Desk: A memorial styled as “eight pillars against foreign aggression” will be inaugurated today in front of BUET main entrance at the Palashi Intersection to commemorate the sixth anniversary of BUET student Abrar Fahad.
Abrar’s father Barkat Ullah will inaugurate the monument around 3pm. Also present will be NCP Member Secretary Akhter Hossen, also the pioneer behind the monument. A memorial meeting has been arranged to mark the inauguration.
The eight pillars of the structure signify: sovereignty, democracy, defence, communal harmony, economic self-reliance, protection of domestic industries-agriculture sectors and rivers-forests-seaports, cultural independence and human dignity.
On 6 October 2019, Chhatra League activists brutally beat to death Abrar at Sher-e-Bangla Hall of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) for speaking up against foreign interference in Bangladeshi internal affairs.
Chhatra League justified the torture on him, saying he was a member of Islami Chhatra Shibir, which was then painted as a “terrorist organization” by the ruling party.
On 7 October 2020, on the occasion of Abrar’s first death anniversary, the first and a similar memorial was erected at the same spot by Bangladesh Student Rights Council (BSRC). Akhter, then a member of BSRC, led the inauguration. Within 24 hours, the Dhaka South City Corporation demolished the structure.
