ACC charge sheet against Saima Wazed Putul on charges of fraud
BanglaPress Desk: The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has filed a charge sheet against Saima Wazed Putul—daughter of the ousted dictator Sheikh Hasina, who is currently a fugitive in India—for providing false information in her curriculum vitae (CV) to secure the position of Regional Director for the World Health Organization (WHO).
This was announced by the Commission’s Secretary, Md. Saidur Rahman Khan, during a regular media briefing at the ACC headquarters on Sunday (October 18).
According to the ACC’s investigation, Saima Wazed included false and fabricated information in her CV—submitted to the WHO for the position of Regional Director for South-East Asia—claiming that she had served as an "honorary expert" at the Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU).
The investigation further reveals that Saima Wazed utilized this false information while serving as the Chairperson of the National Advisory Committee on Autism and Neurodevelopmental Disorders and the Shuchona Foundation to secure the WHO regional directorate.
The investigation report notes that pressure was exerted to have the relevant documents forwarded through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, effectively bypassing the standard verification process. The CV was subsequently transmitted to the WHO headquarters via the Permanent Mission of Bangladesh to the United Nations and other international organizations in Geneva. The investigation concludes that she secured the position of WHO Regional Director for South-East Asia by leveraging this false information.
The ACC’s investigation characterizes these actions as an abuse of power, an act that tarnished the nation's reputation, and criminal misconduct.
A case regarding this matter was filed at the ACC’s Dhaka-1 Integrated District Office on March 20 of last year. The investigation is being led by Tahasin Munabil Haque, Deputy Director of the Money Laundering-1 branch at the ACC headquarters. The charges include sections 420, 468, and 471 of the Penal Code, as well as section 5(2) of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1947. The investigation report also references section 409 of the Penal Code. Based on information obtained during the investigation, the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has filed a charge sheet against Saima Wazed Putul under the relevant legal provisions.
