ACC Requests Interpol Action Against Hasina, 9 Others
Bangla Press Desk: The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has asked Bangladesh Police to apply for Interpol red notices against the banned Awami League’s chief Sheikh Hasina, and nine others linked to her.
Others in the list include Hasina’s son Sajeeb Wazed Joy, daughter Saima Wazed Putul, former police chief Benazir Ahmed, businessmen S Alam, and members of Hasina’s cabinet that was ousted in the 2024 uprising.
ACC Public Relations Officer Tanzir Hasan said the trial court has approved the application for Interpol Red Notices. Now the application will move from the Police Headquarters, to the Home Ministry and finally, to the Interpol Head Office, he added.
On 11 June, the Dubai police arrested Benazir Ahmed, raising hopes and debates over the arrest of others involved in Awami League regime’s corruption activities and repressive acts.
However, to be sure, an Interpol Red Notice does not mean an international arrest warrant, but rather a cautionary signal to member states that a suspected criminal of a foreign nationality has fled his/her country.
A successful extradition of suspects requires further hurdles to cross: the concerned laws of the target country, the presence of a bilateral or multilateral extradition treaty, decisions by the target country’s courts, and Interpol’s own verification process.
