Actor Zaheer Alvi sent to jail after remand
Bangla Press Desk: A Dhaka court on Tuesday sent television actor Md Niamat Ullah Bhuiyan, also known as Zaheer Alvi, to jail after the completion of his police remand in a case filed over the alleged abetment of the suicide of his wife.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Aminul Islam Junaid passed the order following a petition filed in this regard, the complainant's lawyer, Abjal Hossain Mridha, said.
Earlier, Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s Detective Branch Inspector Md Abdul Malek, also the investigating officer of the case, sought his detention in jail after the completion of his two-day remand.
On 18 June, Alvi surrendered before a Dhaka court and sought bail through his lawyers, but the court rejected the plea and ordered that he be sent to jail.
According to the case statement, Alvi allegedly subjected his wife, Afra Ibnat Ikra, to mental abuse and humiliation and made provocative posts about her on social media.
Investigators also claimed that Alvi posted photographs with another woman along with remarks that allegedly caused distress to his wife.
Ikra was found hanging from a ceiling fan at her Mirpur residence on 28 February. She was rushed to Kurmitola General Hospital, where doctors declared her dead.
Her father, Kabir Hayat Khan, later filed a case alleging that prolonged family disputes and various forms of abuse by Alvi had driven his daughter to take her own life.
Alvi and Ikra were married in 2010 and have a son.
In the same case, Alvi's mother, Nasrin Sultana Sheuli, surrendered before the court earlier and was granted bail.
