Age requirements for school admission: age criteria for specific grades.

BanglaPress Desk: The Ministry of Education has published new guidelines for student admission to government and non-government secondary schools for the 2027 academic year. According to these new guidelines, while students for Class 1 will be selected via a lottery, those for Classes 2 through 9 will be chosen through written admission tests.
A notification regarding these guidelines was issued on Tuesday evening (October 13) by the Secondary and Higher Education Division of the Ministry of Education. The notification was signed by Tania Ferdous, Deputy Secretary of the Ministry's Government Secondary-1 Branch.
In accordance with Clause 2 of the guidelines—and following the 'National Education Policy 2010'—it is mandatory to ensure that a student is at least 6 years old for admission to Class 1. However, as of January 1, 2027, the student's age must fall within the range of 5 to 7 years. To verify age, submitting an attested copy of the online birth registration certificate along with the admission application is mandatory. A relaxation of up to five years regarding the maximum age limit may be granted for students with special needs.
The new guidelines specify age limits for admission to each grade from Class 1 to Class 9. Under these rules, the age requirement is 6 to 8 years for Class 2 and 7 to 9 years for Class 3. The age limit is set at 8 to 10 years for Class 4 and 9 to 11 years for Class 5.
Meanwhile, at the secondary level, the age requirements are 10 to 12 years for Class 6, 11 to 13 years for Class 7, 12 to 14 years for Class 8, and 13 to 15 years for Class 9.
According to the guidelines, the 2027 academic year will commence on January 1 and remain in effect until December 31. Schools may admit students from Class 1 up to Class 9 under these guidelines, subject to seat availability. Furthermore, to maintain the educational environment and quality, the notification mandates that a maximum of 55 students may be admitted to any single section of a class.
