Bangla Press Desk: A sub-inspector (SI) of Barishal Metropolitan Police (BMP) has been served with a show-cause notice after using artificial intelligence (AI) to alter the football jersey worn by a suspected drug peddler arrested with yaba tablets before distributing the image to the media.
The notice was issued on Tuesday (30 June) on the instructions of BMP Commissioner Md Ashik Sayeed to SI Tanzil Ahmed, who serves in the police force's media wing.
The incident stems from an operation conducted on Monday (29 June) by Kaunia Police Station in the Mohammadpur Colony area of Barishal city, where officers arrested Russel Hawlader, 35, with 800 yaba tablets. At the time of his arrest, Hawlader was wearing an Argentina national football team jersey.
However, before the arrest photo was circulated to media outlets, BMP's media wing used AI technology to digitally change the Argentina jersey into a Brazil national football team jersey and shared the altered image in a WhatsApp group for journalists.
After the manipulation came to light, it sparked widespread criticism on social media. Acting on the instructions of senior officials, the police later distributed the original photograph with accurate information in the same WhatsApp group and published it on the official Barishal Metropolitan Police Facebook page.
SI Tanzil Ahmed admitted he had altered the image "as a prank" and expressed regret over the incident.
The BMP Commissioner said the matter would be reviewed after receiving the officer's explanation, after which appropriate administrative action would be taken. Source: daily Sun
