Another 6-magnitude earthquake hits Panama; 27 injured.
BanglaPress Desk: Following a powerful 7.7 magnitude earthquake in Panama, a magnitude 6.0 earthquake has struck the country again. The European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) reported that this fresh tremor was felt on Monday (October 12). Concerns regarding damage across various parts of the country are mounting due to the series of earthquakes and subsequent aftershocks. According to the EMSC, the epicenter of the new earthquake was located at a depth of approximately 35 kilometers. Previously, a powerful 7.7 magnitude earthquake hit Panama last Friday (October 9). More than 300 aftershocks have been recorded since that initial quake. The repeated seismic activity has caused damage in several central provinces of Panama. The Panamanian government declared a nationwide state of emergency over the weekend to manage the situation and intensify emergency rescue operations. Emergency rescue authorities report no fatalities so far; however, at least 27 people have been injured, and approximately 900 homes have sustained damage. The affected areas include the provinces of Los Santos, Coclé, Veraguas, and Herrera. Authorities stated that rescue operations and damage assessments are still underway in remote areas, meaning complete information regarding the extent of the damage and casualty figures is not yet available. A clearer picture of the situation is expected once access to these hard-to-reach areas is secured. Meanwhile, anxiety prevails among residents in the affected regions due to the ongoing seismic activity. Rescue teams continue to monitor the situation and assist those affected. Relevant authorities are keeping a close watch on developments following the latest strong tremor. Source: Reuters
