Bangla Press Desk: A court in Miami, USA, has issued an arrest warrant for former Cuban President Raúl Castro, 95, in connection with the 1996 downing of two civilian aircraft, an incident that resulted in the deaths of four people. The court reached this decision following an investigation by law enforcement agencies in Florida. It is alleged that Raúl Castro conspired with Cuban intelligence agents to carry out these killings.
The investigation revealed that two members of a Cuban intelligence service had infiltrated a Miami-based organization under false pretenses. They relayed confidential information regarding flight operations to the Cuban government. In fact, one of the agents was extracted from Florida and returned to Cuba just one day before the aircraft were destroyed. Based on this evidence, the Miami court has established jurisdiction to pursue legal action against Castro.
The incident took place on February 24, 1996, when Cuban fighter jets shot down two small aircraft, killing all four individuals on board. Three of the victims were U.S. citizens. While Cuba claimed that the planes had entered its territory, investigations by the United States and international aviation authorities concluded that the aircraft were in international airspace.
Earlier, in May of this year, the U.S. Department of Justice had filed a case against Castro. This new warrant is being viewed as a significant step toward seeking justice for the events that occurred 30 years ago. Raúl Castro, the brother of the late Cuban leader Fidel Castro, served as the President of Cuba from 2008 to 2018. At the time of the incident, he held the position of head of the country's military.
