Attempted Murder Case: Momtaz Shown Arrested, Ex-Lawmaker Folk Singer
Bangla Press Desk: A Dhaka court on Wednesday showed former lawmaker and popular folk singer Momtaz Begum arrested in a fresh case filed over an attempted murder linked to the July uprising in the capital's Mirpur area.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Ariful Islam passed the order after Investigation Officer SI Md Azizul Haque of Mirpur Model Police Station filed a petition, said Public Prosecutor Omar Faruk Faruqui.
According to the petition, evidence had been found indicating the accused's involvement in the incident. Further interrogation regarding the case might require a remand prayer at a later stage.
During the hearing, the prosecution supported the application, while defence lawyers opposed it, arguing that Momtaz had no involvement in the alleged incident.
According to the case statement, on 4 August 2024, complainant and victim Md Mukhtar Hossain joined a protest in the Mirpur area. Police and activists of the currently banned Awami League allegedly attacked the protesters and opened fire to disperse the movement.
Mukhtar sustained injuries to his chest and other parts of his body after allegedly being hit by bullets fired by police and later received treatment at Kurmitola General Hospital.
Subsequently, he filed an attempted murder case over the incident. Police have now shown Momtaz Begum arrested in the case.
Earlier, members of the Dhaka Metropolitan Detective Branch (DB) Police arrested Momtaz from a house behind Star Kabab in Dhanmondi on 12 May 2025. She has remained in jail since then. Source: daily Sun
