Bangladesh has sent over 400,000 workers to various countries in six months.
Bangla Press Desk: Bangladesh has sent a total of 432,786 workers to various countries around the world over a period of slightly more than six months.
This information was disclosed on Thursday (October 8) during a meeting of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Expatriates' Welfare and Overseas Employment.
It was reported that between February 18 and September 30 of this year, a total of 432,786 workers were sent abroad; this figure includes 36,590 female workers. During the same period, the country received US$ 24.75 billion in remittances, an increase of approximately US$ 2.80 billion compared to the corresponding period of the previous year.
These details were presented at the committee's inaugural meeting, held at the National Parliament House and presided over by Committee Chairman A.K.M. Fazlul Haque Milon.
The committee recommended maintaining strict vigilance to ensure that expatriate workers do not face any negligence or harassment upon their arrival at the airport. Additionally, the committee urged ministry officials and employees to perform their duties diligently to prevent any irregularities or corruption within the ministry's overall operations.
It was also reported at the meeting that, amidst the conflict situation in the Middle East, a total of 186 individuals—including 12 women and eight children—were repatriated from Iran with funding from the Wage Earners' Welfare Board.
Furthermore, the meeting noted that workers are sent abroad through government-approved private recruiting agencies and BOESL (Bangladesh Overseas Employment and Services Limited).
Currently, there are 2,860 recruiting agencies in the country, of which 2,187 are active. Committee members and ministers/state ministers—including Ariful Haque Chowdhury, Md. Nurul Haque, Golam Mohammad Siraj, Md. Jashim Uddin, Rafiqul Islam Hilali, Nasir Uddin Ahmed, Md. Anwarul Islam, and Abul Kawser Mohammad Nazrul Islam—participated in the meeting.
