Bangladesh is in a transitional period: Mirza Fakhrul

Bangla Press Desk:   BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said Bangladesh is in a transitional period, with uncertainty surrounding the upcoming election.

Speaking at an event at Gulshan in the capital on Wednesday, he said the election itself is not the final objective; the real challenge is restoring democracy and rebuilding a democratic culture.

He noted that ensuring an independent and strong judiciary, parliament, media, and administration is essential for a sustainable state.

Fakhrul alleged that while a verdict on alleged crimes against humanity by Sheikh Hasina is being delivered, acts of “mobocracy and violence” are taking place, suggesting attempts by certain quarters to divert public attention. These issues, he said, must be carefully observed to determine whether any group is intentionally creating division.

He added that BNP is a liberal democratic party and has faced extreme repression, including what he described as false cases against six million people and the deaths of around 20,000 leaders and activists.

He said these incidents must be preserved in history and documented, adding that new initiatives are underway for research-based documentation.

The event—organised by BNP and the Nationalist Research Center—included the launch of a book titled ‘BNP in the 2024 Mass Uprising’ and a documentary on the July–August 2024 movement.

The session was chaired by BNP Standing Committee member Abdul Moyeen Khan, with speeches from Selima Rahman, Saiful Haque, B.M. Nagib Hossain, Shahid Uddin Chowdhury Annie, Jubo Dal President Monayem Munna, NPP Chairman Fariduzzaman Farhad, and the book’s editor, Babul Talukder. BNP leaders including Mahadi Amin, adviser to acting chairman Tarique Rahman, were also present.
