Bangladesh Raises Cautionary Signal to 3 at Seaports Amid Bay Low

Bangla Press Desk: A low-pressure system has formed over the northwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining areas, prompting the Bangladesh Meteorological Department to ask all four of the country’s seaports to hoist local cautionary signal No. 3.

The BMD said gusty winds could sweep across the seaports, the north Bay and Bangladesh’s coastal areas under the influence of the system.

Chattogram, Cox’s Bazar, Mongla and Payra seaports have therefore been advised to hoist local cautionary signal No. 3, according to a warning issued by the Storm Warning Centre on Thursday.

Fishing boats and trawlers operating in the north Bay have also been advised to remain close to the coast and proceed with caution until further notice.

Meteorologist Kazi Jebunnesa said the low was currently over the sea and would gradually move towards land.

“It is likely to cross the coast by tomorrow night or the following morning. However, the system is mainly expected to move towards Odisha,” she told bdnews24.com.

Jebunnesa said rainfall was likely to be heavier in Khulna, Barishal and Rajshahi, while Sylhet could also see relatively more rain.

“The low-pressure system will not have much impact on Dhaka. There may be light to moderate rain here,” she said.

In its 24-hour forecast issued at 9am on Thursday, the BMD said many places in Rangpur, Rajshahi, Mymensingh, Dhaka, Khulna, Barishal, Chattogram and Sylhet divisions could see light to moderate rain or thundershowers accompanied by temporary gusty winds.

Moderate to heavy rain may also occur in parts of the country.

Day and night temperatures are likely to remain nearly unchanged.

Kutubdia recorded the country’s highest rainfall in the 24 hours to 6am on Thursday, at 44 millimetres, according to the BMD.

Dhaka recorded 26 millimetres during the same period.
