Bangladesh to seek the return of Sheikh Hasina during talks with India
Bangla Press Desk: In the upcoming fifth consular dialogue with India, Bangladesh will strongly raise the issue of bringing back ousted former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, former Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal, and Faisal—an accused in the murder case of Sharif Osman Bin Hadi.
This will be the first formal diplomatic dialogue between the two nations following the mass uprising in July 2024.
According to diplomatic sources, Bangladesh had proposed holding the meeting in late October; however, India expressed a preference for scheduling it in early November, citing the Durga Puja festival.
Previously, in December 2024, Dhaka had formally requested the extradition of Sheikh Hasina through a diplomatic note. A subsequent request was made following the issuance of a verdict by the relevant tribunal.
Diplomatic sources indicate that this dialogue, held at the Director General level, is expected to take place before a potential visit to India by Tarique Rahman. Alongside various bilateral issues, the matter of repatriating the three accused is expected to be a key focus of the discussions.
Given the current state of relations between the two countries, this upcoming dialogue is considered highly significant. India’s stance on the extradition requests and the progress made during these talks could have a substantial impact on the future trajectory of Dhaka-New Delhi relations
