Bangladeshi woman killed in Florida
Bangla Press Desk: A 42-year-old Bangladeshi woman working at a Florida superstore has been fatally attacked with a hammer, according to her employer.
The incident took place around 7:30am local time on Thursday in Fort Myers City, store owner Arif Ahmed Ashraf said.
Nilufar Yasmin, the victim, was originally from Lakshmipur’s Sadar Upazila.
Employed at “D&D Convenience Store”, where she joined six months ago, Nilufar was living in Fort Myers with her two daughters after parting ways with her husband.
Police arrested a suspect identified as Rolbert Joachin, 40, over the killing.
A video of the attack went viral on social media. It shows a man using a hammer to smash the window of a car parked outside the store.
When Nilufar came out of the store and asked why he was doing so, the man also swung the hammer at her.
She instantly fell to the ground, but the attacker kept bludgeoning her head repeatedly before he finally left.
A Spanish female employee was inside the store at that time, said Ashraf, adding: "A Haitian man recently came to the store and tried to withdraw dollars from an ATM machine. "
“But he got angry and was abusive towards Nilufar because he could not withdraw money due to the wrong PIN number,” Ashraf said.
The Spanish employee reportedly took control of the situation then.
The store owner, referring to the Spanish woman, said the man returned early Thursday morning and started looking for Nilufar while she was saying her Fajr prayers inside the store.
He immediately began smashing the car.
"As she came outside and asked him, 'What's wrong? Why are you doing these?', the man attacked her," Ashraf added.
On information, police rushed to the scene and found her already dead.
Ashraf said he had never seen such a violent crime in the area in more than 15 years.
“Everyone knows this is a peaceful area. But now residents are shocked at Nilufar's murder."
