BCB issues apology over Najmul Islam’s callous 'money back' jibe

Bangla Press Desk: The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) expressed "sincere regret" for recent offensive remarks made by BCB Finance Committee Chairman M Najmul Islam whose abrasive remarks during a Wednesday afternoon press briefing drew immediate condemnation.

Addressing the financial risks of a potential T20 World Cup boycott, Najmul had dismissed the players' concerns, stating the board would suffer "no loss" while the players would bear the brunt of the financial tragedy.

He further sparked outrage by mockingly questioning the financial accountability of the team, asking, “If they go somewhere and cannot do anything…do we ask for that money back from them? Do we? Answer me.”

In response, the Cricketers' Welfare Association of Bangladesh (CWAB) scheduled an emergency online press conference for 9:30pm on Wednesday night. The association called the meeting to protest Najmul’s callous remarks.

Attempting to intercept a potential revolt, the BCB released an official statement distancing itself from the director.

“The board expresses its sincere regret for remarks that may be deemed inappropriate, offensive, or hurtful,” a BCB press release stated, adding that such comments do not align with the "standards of conduct expected from individuals entrusted with the responsibility of serving Bangladesh cricket."

The BCB reiterated that it does not endorse or take responsibility for statements made by any director unless issued through official channels, noting that Najmul’s remarks should be interpreted as "personal in nature."

The board also made it clear that it would "take appropriate disciplinary action against any individual whose conduct or comments show disrespect towards cricketers or cause harm to the reputation and integrity of Bangladesh cricket."

Unequivocally reaffirming its support for the players, the board stated that cricketers remain "at the heart of Bangladesh cricket" and that their welfare remains a top priority.
