BIGGEST CLIMBERS BANGLADESH HIT NEW HIGH
Bangla Press Desk:  Bangladesh women’s football team made the biggest leap in the latest FIFA Women’s World Ranking published on Thursday, jumping 24 places to 104th. It’s their highest-ever position, and the biggest climb by any nation in this edition. With a massive gain of +80.51 points, the team didn’t just move up — they announced themselves. This is the highest-ever ranking achieved by any Bangladesh football team, regardless of gender. The Bangladesh men’s national team reached a best of 116th in the FIFA rankings since the system’s inception in 1992. It’s the kind of leap that doesn’t happen by accident.
Behind the numbers lies a story of belief, grit, and a campaign that may one day be looked back on as a turning point. In the AFC Women’s Asian Cup 2026 qualifiers — which also serve as the Asian route to the FIFA Women’s World Cup Brazil 2027 — Bangladesh were drawn into a group that looked anything but easy. Myanmar, previously ranked 55th. Bahrain, ranked 92nd. Even Turkmenistan, the lowest in the group at 141st, had more ranking pedigree than Bangladesh, who sat at 133rd at the time of the draw. But once the games began, rankings didn’t matter.
Peter Butler’s side beat all three opponents — including a hard-fought win over hosts Myanmar — to finish as group champions and book their place in the final round of the Asian Cup qualifiers for the first time in their history. It wasn’t just about winning. It was about how they won — organised, determined, and confident. A team that once went into matches hoping to hold on now played with the belief that they could take control. That belief has been building. In recent years, Bangladesh have found more success in their women’s football programme — from grassroots development to exposure against stronger sides have only aided the cause. The team’s ability to earn points against higher-ranked opponents is no longer a surprise. It’s becoming a habit.
Now ranked 104th with 1179.87 points, Bangladesh are climbing, both on the pitch and in perception. They’re no longer just the underdogs. They’re contenders for something bigger. Meanwhile, FIFA has congratulated team Bangladesh on this big jump and closing in on 100 through a social media post. Elsewhere in the rankings, Spain returned to the top after reaching the UEFA Women’s EURO 2025 final with five straight wins, pushing the USA down to second. France climbed four spots to sixth following their strong Euros run. But the most striking story sits further down the table — from South Asia, where Bangladesh women’s football just made their loudest statement yet. This article was originally published on Daily Sun.
