Biman's deal with Airbus: 35 aircraft await addition to the fleet.
Bangla Press Desk: Biman Bangladesh Airlines has signed an agreement with Airbus to purchase 10 aircraft. This brings the total number of aircraft in the national flag carrier's long-term fleet expansion plan to 35. The agreement covers the acquisition of four A350-900 wide-body aircraft and six A321neo narrow-body aircraft.
At the signing ceremony—held in the presence of M. Rashiduzzaman Millat, Minister of Civil Aviation and Tourism, and Humayun Kabir, State Minister for Foreign Affairs—Jürgen Westermeier, President and Managing Director of Airbus India and South Asia, and Rumi A. Hossain, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Biman Bangladesh Airlines, signed the agreement on behalf of their respective organizations.
The signing ceremony, titled "Spreading Our Wings Together," took place on Wednesday evening at the Utsab Hall of the Radisson Blu Dhaka Water Garden in the capital.
Also present at the event were Ashik Chowdhury, Executive Chairman of Invest Bangladesh; Fahmida Akhtar, Secretary of the Ministry of Civil Aviation and Tourism; and Sohel Ahmed, Managing Director and CEO of Biman Bangladesh Airlines.
This agreement marks a significant step in Biman's long-term fleet expansion program. It paves the way for the inclusion of Airbus aircraft in Biman's fleet for the first time.
The four A350-900 aircraft have been designated for Biman's long-haul operations, while the six A321neo aircraft will be deployed on regional and medium-haul routes.
With the addition of these aircraft, Biman will gradually transition toward a mixed fleet comprising aircraft from both Boeing and Airbus. This initiative is part of preparations to expand the airline's capacity and route network over the coming decade.
Previously, Biman had agreed to purchase 14 Boeing aircraft. This includes eight 787-10 Dreamliners, two 787-9 Dreamliners, and four 737-8 aircraft.
Subsequently, another 11 Boeing aircraft—five 787-10s and six 737-8s—were added to the program, bringing the total number of planned Boeing aircraft acquisitions for Biman to 25.
Including 10 Airbus aircraft, Biman's long-term fleet acquisition plan now comprises a total of 35 aircraft, consisting of 19 wide-body and 16 narrow-body planes.
This planned fleet expansion is expected to enhance Biman's capability to deploy aircraft as needed across long-haul, regional, and short-to-medium-haul routes.
Meanwhile, Biman is also considering leasing aircraft to meet short-term capacity requirements prior to the commencement of deliveries under the long-term program.
