Brown University shooting suspect found dead

Minara Helen: The suspected gunman authorities believe to be responsible for the Brown University shooting was found dead on Thursday in a New Hampshire storage facility, according to officials.

Claudio Neves Valente, 48, a former Brown student, died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, local police said, according to The Associated Press.

Investigators now believe that Valente, a Portuguese national, is also responsible for the death of a Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) professor who was shot two days after the attack at Brown, a law enforcement official told the AP.

The FBI previously said there was no link between the two cases. MIT professor Nuno F.G. Loureiro died on Tuesday.

“[Valente] took his own life tonight,” Col. Oscar Perez, the Providence police chief, told reporters at a Thursday press conference.

Ultimately, Valente was found in possession of a satchel, two firearms and evidence matching the crime scene in Salem, N.H., officials told CNN.

Police said they received details about his whereabouts after an individual came forward with information about the suspect.

Soon after, “that person came forward to two Providence police officers over on the east side and said he had information that he was that person and that he had information that could help this case,” Rhode Island Attorney General Peter Neronha said, according to NBC News.

“He blew this case right open. He blew it open,” Neronha said.

“That person led us to the car, which led us to the name, which led us to the photographs of that individual renting the car, which matched the clothing of our shooter here in Providence, that matched the satchel,” he said.

The FBI also offered a reward of up to $50,000 for information leading to the identification, arrest and conviction of the individual responsible.

Details about the alleged shooter came after the Providence Police Department (PPD) released a photo of a person it is interested in speaking with. The individual, wearing a dark jacket over a hoodie and dark shoes in the photo, was in the proximity of the person of interest, authorities said.

President Trump on Wednesday slammed Brown for not providing more security camera footage but school officials said the building was old and severely lacked video surveillance.

“Why did Brown University have so few Security Cameras?” Trump wrote on Truth Social. “There can be no excuse for that. In the modern age, it just doesn’t get worse!!!”

However, Brown University spokesperson Brian Clark told The Hill the school worked to ensure the campus was secure with “an expansive network of security cameras, with more than 1,200 cameras installed across campus buildings and spaces in both interior and exterior locations.”

“Brown’s security cameras do not extend to every hallway, classroom, laboratory and office across the 250+ buildings on campus,” Clark said. “For security reasons, it is not prudent to share where cameras are and are not relative to individual buildings and locations.”
