Bus loses control and plunges into a pond while en route to an educational excursion; 2 dead.
BanglaPress Desk: A bus carrying a group from a madrasa on an educational excursion veered out of control and plunged into a roadside pond in Satkania, along the Chattogram-Cox’s Bazar highway. Two people were killed, and at least 30 others sustained injuries. Some of the injured are reported to be in critical condition.
The accident occurred around 4:00 AM on Saturday (November 7), shortly after the vehicle passed the ‘Railbit’ area, near Keranihat in Satkania.
The bus was traveling from Burichong Upazila in Cumilla toward Cox’s Bazar. It was carrying over 50 passengers—including teachers and students from the Bakshimul Sunniya Islamia Senior Madrasa in Burichong—who were heading to Cox’s Bazar for an educational trip. This information was provided by passengers traveling in another bus that was part of the same excursion.
The two deceased have been identified as Sohana Afroz (45), a teacher at the madrasa, and Israfil (56). Following the accident, local residents and workers from a nearby brick kiln rushed to assist, pulling passengers from the bus. The injured were subsequently transported to various hospitals in Keranihat and Chattogram; two individuals passed away while being taken to the hospital.
Nurul Absar, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of the Dohazari Highway Police Station, stated, "The bus lost control and fell into a roadside pond. Two people were killed, and at least 30 others were injured. As the accident took place in the early morning, local residents initially rescued the injured and took them to hospitals. Highway police later arrived at the scene to assist with the rescue efforts. The bus has been recovered, and legal action is being initiated regarding the incident."
Meanwhile, local residents have expressed concern over an increase in road accidents on the Chattogram-Cox’s Bazar highway in recent days. They argue that the project to upgrade the highway to six lanes must be implemented urgently and have called upon the relevant authorities to expedite the work.
