Calls Grow for Shishir Monir’s Expulsion from Jamaat
Bangla Press Desk: Calls have been made for Shishir Monir to be expelled from Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami for serving as a lawyer for the accused in the murder case of BUET student Abrar Fahad.
Prime Minister’s Political Assistant Rashed Khan made the demand while responding to questions from journalists after attending a freshers’ reception as the chief guest at Uzir Ali School and College in Jhenaidah on Thursday (Oct 8). Rashed Khan said Jamaat and Islami Chhatra Shibir, on the one hand, protest Abrar Fahad’s murder, while on the other hand allowing Shishir Monir to represent the accused in the case. He described the position as contradictory. “Jamaat’s double standards are known to the people. Everyone took to the streets to protest Abrar’s killing. Even Shibir and the NCP organised programmes. But my question is, Shishir Monir represented the accused in the Abrar murder case. He is a lawyer for Jamaat and was also a Jamaat parliamentary candidate,” Rashed Khan said.
He added, “When Jamaat’s lawyer Shishir Monir represents the accused in Abrar’s case, on what grounds does Shibir take to the streets? That is the question I am raising.”
The prime minister’s political assistant further claimed that Shishir Monir and others did not take to the streets during the July uprising. He questioned whether Monir had made any Facebook posts supporting the July movement at the time. “I doubt whether he has any Facebook post in support of the July movement. His profile was not even turned red,” Rashed Khan said.
