Bangla Press Desk: State Minister for Fisheries and Livestock Sultan Salahuddin Tuku on Monday announced plans to upgrade the Chattogram Zoo to meet international standards.
He said the zoo will be developed not only as a recreational destination but also as a center for wildlife conservation, research, education, and public awareness on biodiversity.
The state minister made the remarks while briefing journalists after visiting Chattogram Zoo on Monday.
He said, "The zoo will be redesigned so that future generations—especially school, college, and university students—can gain practical knowledge about the country's important animal species, their habitats, characteristics, and ecological significance."
He added that the purpose of a modern zoo extends beyond displaying animals. Rather, it should provide an integrated environment for wildlife conservation, research, and other issues. To achieve this, Chattogram Zoo will be equipped with modern infrastructure, improved management, visitor-friendly facilities, and a range of educational activities.
The state minister also said the government is planning ways to modernize zoos across Bangladesh and make them more attractive in line with visitors' needs and expectations. The initiative aims to transform the country's zoos into important centers of learning where children, adolescents, and young people can gain knowledge about nature and wildlife, rather than viewing them solely as places for recreation.
Speaking about the development of Chattogram Zoo, he said efforts will be made to ensure safe and healthy habitats for the animals while expanding modern amenities for visitors.
"We want to transform Chattogram Zoo into an attractive destination where families can spend quality time together. At the same time, the new generation will have the opportunity to gain practical knowledge about the country's wildlife resources and biodiversity," he said.
During the visit, Humam Qader Chowdhury, MP for Chattogram-7 constituency; Md Shahjaman Khan, director general of the Department of Livestock Services; and senior officials from various government agencies were also present.
