
Chief Adviser Arrives in New York for UN Assembly


Chhabed Sathee: Chief Adviser of the interim government, Professor Muhammad Yunus, has arrived in New York to attend the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly. At 3:10 p.m. local time on Monday (September 22), an Emirates Airlines commercial flight carrying the Chief Adviser and members of his delegation landed at Terminal 8 of John F. Kennedy International Airport.
At that time, a large number of Awami League leaders and activists in the U.S. staged demonstrations in the parking lot outside the terminal, chanting various slogans.
From midday, leaders and activists of the U.S. Awami League had gathered at JFK Airport to stage protests. Meanwhile, the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) held a welcoming rally to greet the Chief Adviser and the BNP Secretary General. Activists from both parties faced off against each other, shouting slogans and carrying colorful banners and festoons. The atmosphere became tense as both sides clashed verbally. Even before the flight landed at Terminal 8, the entire area echoed with slogans both in support of and against the Chief Adviser.
Since midday, leaders and activists of the U.S. BNP and its associate organizations had gathered to welcome the Chief Adviser, chanting slogans. On the other side of the terminal, the U.S. Awami League and its affiliates staged protests to oppose him.
At around 3:45 p.m., as members of the Chief Adviser’s delegation exited the terminal and were heading toward their vehicles, Awami League activists hurled eggs at them.
This year, six political leaders are accompanying the Chief Adviser. Among them are BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, BNP Acting Chairman’s foreign affairs adviser Humayun Kabir, Jamaat-e-Islami’s Nayeb-e-Ameer Syed Abdullah Muhammad Taher, National Citizens’ Party (NCP) member secretary Akhtar Hossain, and joint convener Dr. Tasnim Zara, who all joined the delegation from Dhaka. In addition, Jamaat leader Nakibur Rahman Tarek joined the delegation from the United States.
According to the schedule, Professor Yunus will deliver his address at the United Nations General Assembly on September 26.
Ahead of the Chief Adviser’s visit, on Sunday evening (September 21), leaders and activists of both BNP and Awami League faced off in Jackson Heights. That evening, at Diversity Plaza in Jackson Heights, both groups held rallies at the same time with their leaders, activists, and supporters present.
