Court Jails Man for Life in Drug Case

Bangla Press Desk:  A Dhaka court on Monday sentenced a man to life imprisonment in a case filed over the recovery of 225 packets of heroin from the capital’s Kafrul area in the capital in 2016.

Dhaka Speedy Trial Tribunal-1 Judge Md Rahibul Islam pronounced the verdict against Md Rob Mia, the accused, said State Prosecutor Abdur Rashid Molla.The court also fined the accused Tk10,000, in default of which he will have to serve an additional year of rigorous imprisonment.

However, the court also issued an arrest warrant against Rob Mia as he was absconding when the verdict was pronounced.According to the case documents, on 23 February 2016, police conducted a drive in the Kazipara Overbridge area and arrested Rob Mia. Police recovered and seized 225 packets of heroin from his possession.

Police later filed a case under the Narcotics Control Act. Kafrul Police Station Sub-Inspector Md Bayezid Mostafa submitted a charge sheet against the accused on 31 March 2016.

On 3 August of the same year, the court framed charges against him and ordered the trial to begin. During the trial, the court recorded the testimony of five out of eight witnesses.
