Dazzling Bangladesh demolish Bahrain with seven-goal blitz
Bangla Press Desk: The Bangladesh women’s national football team had a flying start in the AFC Women’s Asian Cup Qualifiers as they defeated Bahrain 7-0 at Thuwunna Stadium in Yangon, Myanmar on Sunday. This win secured the second position for coach Peter Butler’s disciples after matchday 1 of group C, as the hosts Myanmar had a commanding 8-0 victory over Turkmenistan on the same day. Bangladesh had the perfect start of the game as the scoreline started counting on the 10th minute for the red-and-green side. Midfielder Sapna Rani’s long ball found Shamsunnahar Jr running through the right wing, who chipped over Bahrain’s goalkeeper Khulood Saleh Mohamed Adam Abdulla to score the first goal. The lead doubled after six minutes, as Sapna Rani delivered another excellent long ball – this time to the left winger Ritu Porna Chakma. Ritu Porna ended the attack with a brilliant long ranger.
Bangladesh’s game escalated quickly at the later part of the first half, as they scored three within nine minutes. In the 40th minute, Monika Chakma passed to Maria Manda from a corner, who crossed the ball after a quick run. Bahrain defenders’ mistake provided an easy opportunity to Kohati Kisku, who finished with a cool head. In the second minute of added time, Monika Chakma’s pass found Tohura Khatun who scored her first of the match following a goalkeeping error. Tohura scored her second just after two minutes, as Bahrain’s poor defending led to an excellent one-two-one between herself and Shamsunnahar Jr. Shamsunnahar Jr’s cutback found her in the box, and Tohura netted her second. Bangladesh went to the break with 5-0 lead, virtually sealing the game. But the hunger for goal did not disappear for Peter Butler’s side.
Shamsunnahar Sr’s cross from the left wing found Shamsunnahar Jr in the box in the 60th minute. Bahrain defender Rawan Nabeel Hasan Mohamed Ali could not clear Shamsunnahar Jr’s magnificent cutback, rather lead to an own goal. In the 74th minute, substitute Shaheda Akter Ripa passed to another substitute – Munki Akter, who netted Bangladesh’s seventh of the night after a nice run. Bangladesh will face Myanmar on 2 July on the same ground. The Tigresses will end their group stage on 5 July with the Turkmenistan match. This article was originally published on Daily Sun.
