Democracy will return on a positive track: Jamaat
Bangla Press Desk: Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami has described the High Court ruling restoring the caretaker government system as an important milestone in the country’s history.
Speaking at an urgent press conference at the party’s central office in Mogbazar, Dhaka, yesterday, Assistant Secretary General and Head of the Media Department Ehsanul Mahbub Zubayer said the public had long awaited the return of this system.
He added that the ruling would strengthen democracy and ensure citizens’ voting rights, allowing democracy to return to a positive track.
Zubayer criticised the previous verdict that abolished the caretaker government system, calling it controversial and politically motivated.
He said the abolition had provided an opportunity for Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to establish authoritarian rule.
He noted that the concept of a caretaker government was first introduced by Jamaat’s former Amir, Professor Golam Azam, whose farsighted proposal had now prevailed. Zubayer added that past elections without a caretaker system had been marked as tainted in the country’s history.
He expressed Jamaat’s expectation that the interim government would play a responsible role to ensure the upcoming parliamentary election is fair, participatory, and impartial.
Zubayer warned that if attempts are made to manipulate the election as in previous years, Jamaat would mobilise public support to counter such moves.
The Jamaat leader described the ruling as ushering in a new era of neutral elections, emphasising that the public had long awaited the return of the caretaker system, which would now strengthen democracy and protect citizens’ voting rights.
