Detained accused killed in ‘gunfight’

A detained accused was killed in a reported gunfight with police in Abaderhat area of Agardari union in Satkhira Sadar upazila on early Sunday.
The deceased is Nawab Ali Molla, 38, son of certain Mujeet Molla of Bokchora village in the Sadar upazila.
Nawab Ali was accused in 15 cases in connection with robbery, murder and hijacking motorbikes, according to the police.
Satkhira sadar police station officer-in-charge Maruf Ahmed said Nawab was a fugitive for a long time. He was recently arrested by the police of Patkelghata police station and handed over to Satkhira sadar police station.
During the interrogation Nawab informed the police about illegal arms. Police took him to Abaderhat area to recover the arms at around 4:00am.
A group of miscreants opened fire on the law enforcers, prompting them to retaliate and triggering the gunfight, said the OC.
The shootout continued for 15 minutes and Nawab and three members of police were shot by the miscreants at the time, he added.
Police recovered a pistol, one round bullet, two machetes and two knives from the spot, police said.
The injured were rushed to Satkhira sadar hospital where the physicians declared Nawab dead.
Nawab bore two bullet marks on both side of his chest, said Iqbal Mahmud, a physician of the hospital.
Police is processing to file two cases regarding this incident, said the OC.
The law enforcement’s version of the event was, however, not verified independently and no version of the incident was available immediately either from any witnesses or from any members of the victim’s family.
