Dhaka awaits Saudi response regarding death sentences of two Bangladeshis

BanglaPress Desk: Riyadh has yet to respond to inquiries sent by Dhaka regarding the execution of two Bangladeshi nationals in Saudi Arabia. This was confirmed on Wednesday (October 21) by Shahidul Karim, a spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The two individuals were executed on October 14, without prior notification to the Bangladeshi authorities.
Earlier this week, State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shama Obaid Islam stated that the Bangladesh government had requested an explanation from Saudi Arabia concerning the circumstances of the executions.
She noted that the government has sought clarification on several points: a copy of the court verdict, details regarding the specific crimes for which they were convicted, and the reasons why the Bangladeshi diplomatic mission was not informed of the matter.
Citing the Saudi Ministry of Interior, Saudi media reported that a man and a woman were executed after being found guilty of engaging in indecent acts inside a mosque in the holy city of Mecca.
Shama Obaid Islam stated that once the detailed case information and relevant documentation are received, the government will consult with Saudi authorities to determine the next course of action.
Shama Obaid urged the public to exercise patience regarding the case of the two executed expatriates. She also advised against drawing conclusions based on Facebook posts and cautioned against misinformation and false information circulating on social media.
Notably, Saudi Arabia is the largest labor market for Bangladeshi expatriates.
Approximately 3.5 million Bangladeshi workers reside in the country, and the remittances they send home play a vital role in Bangladesh's economy. Consequently, the rights and safety of these expatriates remain a significant issue in the bilateral relations between the two nations.
