Dhaka–Sylhet–Chattogram route closed for 6 hours
Bangla Press Desk: Train services on the Dhaka–Sylhet–Chattogram route were suspended for nearly five and a half hours after a coach of the Dhaka Mail-2 (down) train, traveling from Dhaka to Chattogram, derailed at Bhairab Bazar Junction in Kishoreganj.
The accident occurred at around 3:00am early Monday about 150 meters after the train crossed Bhairab Bazar Junction. The train had departed from Dhaka Railway Station at 11:45pm.
According to railway sources, at 2:55am the cabin station master at Bhairab Bazar Junction gave the Dhaka Mail-2 train the signal to proceed. After moving a short distance, a coach—the fourth from the engine—suddenly derailed. As a result, both the up and down lines at Bhairab Bazar Junction became inoperative. Consequently, from 3:00am all train movement on the Dhaka–Sylhet–Chattogram route came to a halt, causing severe suffering for passengers.
Bhairab Railway Station Master Md Yusuf Mia said that it was not possible to immediately begin removing the derailed coach from the tracks after the accident. Later, a relief train was dispatched from Akhaura to assist with the recovery operation. Rescue work is currently underway, and train services will be restored as soon as the work is completed.
