Dhaka University roars, DUCSU elections to be held on time
Bangla Press Desk: The Dhaka University (DU) witnessed widespread protests on Monday after the High Court ordered the postponement of the much-anticipated Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (DUCSU) elections. Following the verdict, students from several residential halls staged processions and converged at the VC Chattar and Raju Memorial Sculpture, chanting slogans demanding that the polls be held as scheduled. They said, “We reject conspiracies against DUCSU, and polls must be held on September 9.” Protesters alleged that the court’s directive was influenced by vested interests seeking to obstruct the democratic process. They insisted the campus remained peaceful and fully prepared for the election.
DUCSU Election Commission Chief Professor Dr. Jasim Uddin voiced disappointment at the sudden development. “We were moving forward smoothly according to the announced schedule. There is no conflict on campus. It is unclear on what grounds the High Court reached such a decision,” he said. Several candidates also expressed concern, warning that delaying the polls could destabilize the campus and trigger wider political unrest. Earlier in the day, a High Court bench led by Justice Habibul Gani and Justice Sheikh Tahsin Ali had stayed the DUCSU elections following a writ petition challenging the candidacy of Islami Chhatra Shibir-backed GS contender SM Farhad. However, the scenario shifted dramatically within an hour when the Appellate Division of Chamber Court overturned the High Court order.
DU lawyer Advocate Shishir Monir confirmed: “The Chamber Court has stayed the earlier order. There is no longer any barrier to holding the DUCSU elections on September 9.” The DU administration reaffirmed its commitment to conducting a fair, transparent, and participatory election.
