DU authorities remove portraits of late Jamaat leaders from TSC event
  Bangla Press Desk: The Dhaka University (DU) proctorial team has removed images of a number of late politicians, mostly belonging to Jamaat-e-Islami, after students protested that they were against Bangladesh’s independence.
The leaders ­– Matiur Rahman Nizami, Abdul Kader Molla, Mir Kashem Ali, Mohammad Kamruzzaman, and Ali Ahmed Mohammad Mujahid, among others – were also convicted of war crimes during the Awami League fascist rule and most were hanged to death for the alleged activities. Their images were displayed at TSC on Tuesday as part of a three-day July Uprising memorial programme being organized by Islami Chhatra Shibir, the student front of Jamaat-e-Islami. As per a banner attached to the display, Shibir claimed the Jamaat leaders were victims of “judicial killings.”
Shibir also displayed symbolic images of women participants of last year’s uprising, and images of prominent uprising martyrs like Abu Sayed, among others. However, the display on “judicial killings” took away the limelight. In a short span, social media criticisms mounted against the display, and students launched on-site demonstrations. Despite Shibir’s political ties to the controversial Jamaat leaders, the student outfit has recently been held in high esteem among different quarters due to its crucial role in last year’s anti-Awami League (AL) uprising. However, ever since the ouster of AL government, Shibir’s controversial political ties and treatment of the Liberation War have resurfaced time and again, raising questions over the group’s respect for national sovereignty and historic Liberation War.
