Education Minister Announces Retakes Within 15 Days for Students Failing Two Subjects
Bangla Press Desk: Education Minister Dr ANM Ehsanul Haque Milan has said the government is planning to allow students who fail in up to two subjects in the Secondary School Certificate (SSC) examinations to retake the exams within 15 days of the publication of results. At the same time, plans are being considered to shift students to technical and vocational education rather than allowing repeated academic failures to continue.
He made the remarks on Tuesday afternoon while inaugurating an orientation training course for the 49th Bangladesh Civil Service (General Education) cadre officers at the auditorium of the Rural Development Academy in Bogura.
The education minister said the country was experiencing a decline in moral values. “We have to start with one generation so that this decline can be prevented in the future,” he said.
He added that the prime minister had prioritised culture, sports, moral education and “Learning with Happiness” from Class Four this year.
Speaking about students who drop out or fail, Milan said those who had passed had already moved forward, but students who had failed or dropped out needed to be addressed first. The authorities were considering ways to revitalise and reintegrate these students into education, he added.
Outlining the proposed changes to the SSC examination system, the minister said students failing in no more than two subjects would be given another opportunity to sit for the examinations within 15 days of the results being published.
“We will not carry this legacy of failure forward year after year,” he said.
Whether students would continue in the general education system would depend on their performance in the re-examinations held within the 15-day period. Those unable to pass would be moved to technical or vocational education, he added.
The orientation programme was organised by the National Academy for Educational Management (NAEM) and chaired by Dr Sardar Keramat Ali, secretary (routine charge) of the Secondary and Higher Education Division.
Special guests included Bogura-6 MP Rezaul Karim Badsha; Professor Dr Khan Moinuddin Al Mahmud Sohel, director general of the Directorate of Secondary and Higher Education; Professor Dr Wasim Md Mezbahul Haque, director general of NAEM; and Dr Md Abdul Majid Pramanik, acting director general of the Rural Development Academy in Bogura.
