Education Minister’s new message regarding teacher transfers
BanglaPress Desk: Dr. A.N.M. Ehsanul Haque Milon, Minister of Education and Minister of Primary and Mass Education, has expressed frustration regarding the issue of transferring MPO-listed (government-subsidized) teachers. He noted that there have been 392 separate protests in the country, all of which have targeted the Ministry of Education.
He made these remarks while speaking as the chief guest at the 34th anniversary celebration of the Bangladesh Open University (BOU) on Wednesday (October 28).
Addressing the matter of MPO-listed teacher transfers, the Education Minister said, "The issue of transferring MPO-listed teachers has become a massive burden for me! During Begum Khaleda Zia’s tenure, I established the NTRCA (Non-Government Teachers Registration and Certification Authority). The system was designed for the NTRCA to issue certificates, after which teachers would approach local school management committees to secure appointments. However, the previous government issued certificates, appointments, and postings in a completely indiscriminate and haphazard manner!"
He continued, "Now, we have a situation where someone originally from Rangpur is posted in Kachua, someone from Barishal is in Rangpur, and someone from Khagrachhari is in Barishal. Upon taking office, I realized that a transfer process was necessary. It seemed logical—for instance, if a teacher from Rangpur is currently posted in Kachua, they should be sent back to Rangpur. I even developed an app to facilitate these transfers."
Regarding transfer requests, the Minister remarked, "Everyone wants a transfer now! Someone in Kachua wants a transfer to Viqarunnisa [Noon School & College]! Others want to move to Ideal School, Monipur School, or Shaheen School! Do you see what I mean?"
Speaking about the pressure exerted by teachers regarding transfers, Dr. Milon said, "Some MPO-listed teachers, acting as representatives, have even threatened me—saying that if the transfers aren't completed by October 31st, they’ll 'show me'! 'Show me'—can you imagine? You are an MPO-listed teacher; your job is to teach in your school or madrasa. This is not your responsibility—it is mine! Let me do it!"
Reflecting on the trend of protests targeting the Ministry of Education, he added, "Do you realize the state our country has reached?" So far, there have been 392 agitations (protests) in Bangladesh! And who’s the target, can you guess? The Ministry of Education!
