Elderly woman sets Guinness World Record by walking on the wing of an airplane at age 99
Bangla Press Desk: Helga Duffy, a 99-year-old woman, has once again proven that age is merely a number. Demonstrating extraordinary courage, she took part in "wing walking"—an adventurous feat that involves standing or walking on the wing of an aircraft while it is in flight.
By doing so, this English resident has earned a place in the Guinness World Records as the oldest "wing walker" in history. Helga was inspired to attempt this after seeing a report in Guinness World Records about 97-year-old Betty Bromage, who had also performed a wing walk; Helga decided she would break that record.
This incredible feat took place at Rendcomb Airfield in Gloucestershire, United Kingdom. Helga described the experience of being strapped securely to the top wing of a small biplane while in the air as "bizarre but thrilling." She noted that she felt no fear at all—in fact, she was incredibly excited by the entire experience.
As the eldest of seven siblings, Helga believes that her late father would be immensely proud of this achievement by his firstborn. Following the successful landing of the aircraft, officials from Guinness World Records presented her with an official certificate recognizing her record-breaking accomplishment.
Beyond the thrill of setting a record, Helga’s endeavor served a noble social cause: she raised over £1,300 for the "Wiltshire Air Ambulance" charity. Her family members were deeply moved by her bravery. Her nieces, Jackie Rose and Julie Price, remarked that at 99 years old, their aunt has shown that she remains as self-reliant and indomitable as ever. The initiative holds even greater significance for the family, as the air ambulance service had been used during their mother’s final journey. Meanwhile, 97-year-old Betty Bromage—from whom Helga took the record—offered a playful congratulation, stating that she intends to board a plane again at the age of 100 to reclaim her title by breaking Helga’s record. This story of overcoming the limitations of age to reach for the skies—even in the twilight of one’s life—is now serving as an inspiration to people across the globe. Source: BBC
